Passports, Citizenship and Social Insurance Numbers

Passports

Since March 2006, Canadian citizens applying for passports at the Embassy in Vienna are issued the same high quality, security enhanced, machine-readable passport as they would in Canada.

The delivery a new passport requires 20 business days upon receipt of a correctly completed application. However, during busy periods this may not always be possible. We recommend applying for a new passport well in advance of any planned travel (Voyage).

Passport application forms together with instructions can be downloaded from the Passport Canada website. Information on passports for children can also be found on the Passport Canada website.

You may also contact us to obtain forms and further information at:

Facsimile: + 43 (1) 531-38-3905 or 3910

Hours of Operation

Monday to Friday 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Please read the passport photo specifications carefully and  inform your photographer.

The application form and one of the photos  must be certified by a guarantor.

If you have not known an eligible guarantor for at least two years, the Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor is required. The form must be signed at your expense before a person authorized by law to administer an oath or solemn affirmation.

For a fee a consular officer could sign this form and your photo at the Embassy in Vienna.

Passport application fees are payable by credit card, cash or postal money order.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada recently implemented a new worldwide credit card payment method. All applications paid by credit card now require a new fully completed payment form. These payments are subject to a service charge. Credit card payments are processed through an online processing agent. Please complete the authorization form.

The form must reflect the exact charges for services requested and be completed in Canadian dollars. Failure to complete the form in full or authorize the correct fees may result in delays to your application.

Postal money orders should be made out to "Canadian Embassy, Eva Eiszner / Peter Weissenhofer, PL-1010 Vienna".

If your passport has been lost or stolen, please contact the Embassy as soon as possible. We will do everything possible to replace your passport, subject to verification of your identity and your entitlement to Canadian citizenship. In certain cases, it may be necessary for you to reschedule your travel plans.

Elimination of 48-page passport

In preparation for the global deployment of the Canadian ePassport and in accordance with Canada's Passport and Other Travel Document Services Fees Regulations, Passport Canada is no longer issuing the 48 page passport.

Canadian Citizenship

Persons born outside of Canada to a Canadian parent may have a claim to Canadian citizenship by derivation. You can find information about this online at the New citizenship rules

If you have a claim to Canadian citizenship by birth abroad you should apply for proof of citizenship in the form of a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship. These certificates are issued from Canada by the Office of the Registrar General, which also makes final decisions regarding eligibility.

Office of the Registrar General

P.O. Box 7000

Sydney, Nova Scotia, B1P 6V6

Canada

Should you have any queries regarding possible eligibility or wish to obtain forms to apply for a Certificate of Citizenship for yourself or your child, please contact the Consular Section of the Canadian Embassy in Vienna. You can also find the forms online at:

Application for a citizenship certificate

Your completed application must be sent through the consular services of the Embassy. The Registrar General will send the Certificate of Citizenship to our attention and we will send it to the applicant.

Application can take up to 18 months to process but in certain cases limited validity Canadian passports may be issued by this office in the meantime.

Dual Nationality

Canada accepts dual nationality. Austria accepts dual nationality under certain conditions only. A person may hold both citizenship and may carry both Austrian and Canadian passports only under special circumstances.
